St.Mark Square

St. Mark’s Square is situated in the centre of the Upper Town with the Church of St. Mark in the middle.

It was the centre of trade and social life of the former Gradec until the mid-19th century when it became the Croatian political centre. Today, it is still the symbol of political life in Croatia – Croatian presidents take their oath here and important state institutions, the Croatian Parliament, the Government and the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia are placed in the surrounding buildings. The Old Town Hall is placed in Ćirilometodska Street and it was here since Middle Ages. Today it is the place for the Town Assembly meetings.
